Finally, a Cal-King Bed Frame with space for dog kennels

Posted by Unknown Posted on 11:05 AM with No comments

Materials: 3 Expedit Units, two sheets of plywood, five 4 x 4's, 5 metal ties, 10 metal brackets, king-sized sheet, staple gun.

Description: We had a really hard time trying to find a platform for our Cal-King mattress that would afford us the kind of storage we needed for our small two-bedroom condo in Southern California. Most of the platform storage beds for sale were prohibitively expensive. We had seen a few people make smaller beds on this site using the Expedit bookshelves, so we decided to give it a go ourselves.

Step One: Spend several weeks researching and arguing about how to design your bed. Or use our guidelines and skip to step two.

Step Two: Purchase and build your Expedit shelves. You will need three. (You can also purchase any storage bins you will need to fill the shelves under your bed.

Step Three (The night before): PLUG IN THE CORDLESS DRILL. This small step will help make this a one day project, instead of a two day project. Don't ask me how we know know this. It is too painful to talk about.

Step Four: Make sure you have a plan for where to sleep if this project does not get finished in one day.

Step Five: You will need two sheets of 3/4" hardwood plywood. We used Alderwood because Lowe's was out of the Maple we wanted. Maple is less expensive at about $45 per sheet. Each sheet needs to be about 72" x 42". You should measure your mattress to be sure. We have a Tempurpedic mattress.

Step Six: There are a couple of options for how to attach the two sheets of plywood together. We considered using hinges, so that we could open the end half of the bed if we wanted to. Unfortunately, the Tempurpedic is not suited to this. So we bought steel ties and screwed them on to connect the two pieces of plywood together. You will want to reinforce on both sides if you use the steel ties. The ties were about $1 a piece.

Step Seven: You will need five 4x4s. Lowe's will not cut them for you, so your choice is to cut them yourself, or to make them from 2x4s. Have them cut to 17.5" each. You may need to cut them to a more specific height if you are on hard surface instead of carpet. We chose to have the legs a little taller than the shelves, so the platform would support most of the weight of the mattress. The extra height allowed for the platform to sink in a little to the carpet, meeting the top of the shelves, without putting too much weight on them. We screwed ours together with 2.5" wood screws.

Step Eight: Attach brackets to the 4x4s and then screw the 4x4s onto the underside of the plywood. Brackets were about $1 a piece. The 2x4 we bought was about $8, and then cut into the 10 pieces we needed, and we had a piece leftover.

Step Nine: I used a king-sized sheet and staple gun to wrap the plywood. This isn't necessary, it is cosmetic and it will protect the mattress and the tops of the shelves.

Once we were done building, we flipped the platform, and slid the shelves into place, put the dog kennels and storage bins in.

Step Ten: Enjoy your new bed!

We added a bench at the end, because I am too short to sit on the bed to put on my shoes and we have no other furniture in our bedroom. (Dog not included, you will need your own dog)

    Besta Odda Loft Bed

Posted by Unknown Posted on 9:15 AM with No comments

    Photo: IKEA.com
Materials: BESTA, ODDA, metal braces and L brackets + Trofast

Description: My daughter has always wanted a low loft bed for her room. I did a surprise room makeover for her while she was away at a one week sleep away camp.

At first I bought a low loft bed from Walmart and after finished assembling it, I realized how bad it looked in her room. My son who has an Odda bed (pix, right) offered to take the ugly Walmart loft and swap it with his bed.

Having only 2 days left to complete the surprise, I bought some Besta bookcases to make the base and turned the Odda bed into a loft bed.

First I assembled all the Besta bookcases and screwed them together with some metal braces and L brackets.

Then I assembled the Odda bed frame on top of the Besta base, and screwed them to the base with L brackets.

We had a safety bed rail lying around that we were no longer using, so I used it to make the side wall for the loft.

Final step is adding the Trofast shelves for the stairs.

I drew all of the pieces in 3D before heading to Ikea to buy all the items. Thanks to Ikea website that listed all product dimensions, all the pieces fit perfectly in the room.

My daughter loves her new room.

*Note* I know the Besta has an exposed back next to the stair. I'm planning to finish it with some fabric. I built this whole thing by myself in 2 nights. It was good enough for the surprise.

    Double-deck Rast

Posted by Unknown Posted on 4:45 AM with No comments

Materials: 2 x Rast, 4 x FÅGLEBODA Handles, 1 x FÅGLAVIK Handle, other Hanles, Screws, Paint, Saw, e wooden board/shelf

    Description:
I had one Rast, the outer part painted in white with silver FÅGLEBODA Handles on the drawers. This was nice, but not nice enough so I decided to buy another Rast, getting more colors and replace a drawer with a shelf.

I started by painting one drawer front in red and used some handles I had for a long time. They are similar to the ones that came with the Rast but a little bit bigger, darker and more used looking.

As you can see on the pictures, I cut 2 drawer fronts in 2 parts and just put them together on the inside with a small plate and some screws. So when you look at the Rast it seems as if are two drawers but it's still just one.

I painted them and used some different handles.

Then I placed one Rast on top of the other and for that it's more stable I drilled some holes and used the small parts you normally use for shelves (in billy for example) - I don't know how they're called but you can see them on one pic.

What else? Oh yes, I didn't fix the small board on the bottom of the upper Rast and I replaced a drawer with a shelf.

    Guess that's all...

Duktig Kitchen Goes from Bland to Bling

Posted by Unknown Posted on 8:26 AM with No comments

Materials: Apa storage box, Tag handles, Duktig mini-kitchen

Description: My boyfriend's sister and I wanted to give her 2-year-old daughter the Duktig mini-kitchen as a birthday gift, but we were unimpressed by a few things:

    1) It's boring. Adults might like the minimalist, white and natural wood look, but no little kid is getting psyched over that.

    2) No fridge. Where do you store all your play food?

    3) The oven has a shelf in it instead of an oven rack. Not very realistic.

We fixed these issues pretty simply, basically by painting the hell out of it. As for the missing fridge, we used an Apa storage box on its side, spray painted metallic silver on the outside and painted white on the inside. We attached hinges to keep the door on, and used Tag handles in two different sizes to act as freezer and fridge handles. I used my Cameo cutting machine to design and cut out a Frigidaire-style label with her name on it for the front of the fridge, just to make it that more awesome. The stove situation was solved by painting the shelf grey and drawing a grid on it with a Sharpie.

My niece loved the finished product and it was definitely the highlight of her birthday.

    Over Sofa Table

Posted by Unknown Posted on 4:53 AM with No comments
To friends and readers in the US, happy happy July 4th! ~ Jules

Materials: Fabian / Lack / Ekby / Assorted Screws / Stain

Description: Underwhelmed by the selection of over sofa tables on the market, especially for the price. (Including Ikea's Stockholm table.) Opted to hack my own! Two Fabian wall shelves. Four Ekby Stodis brackets. One Lack wall shelf.

Placed the two Fabians perpendicular and braced with two of the supplied metal Fabian brackets. Attached two Ekby brackets for increased stability. Attached two more Ekby brackets to the Lack top.

Then attached Ekby / Lack piece to the Fabian shelf. Voila! A new over sofa table that cost around $25.00.

One tip: choose screw sizes carefully lest you screw through the Fabian shelves. After assembly, we stained the table. In retrospect, we should have stained before assembly but we first wanted to see if this even worked. Presumably, this hack can be altered style and color wise to meet your own tastes. Enjoy!

RTV unit from kitchen and bathroom cabinets

Posted by Unknown Posted on 1:41 PM with No comments

Materials: Kitchen and bathroom Ikea cabinets

Description: This was an open space kitchen/living area. We wanted to keep things simple and uniform. After selecting Nexus and Abstract fronts for the kitchen we came up with an idea of using the same for the nearby entertainment unit.

What we used were kitchen cabinets 40x92 cm (Nexus fronts) covered (as in the kitchen) with Pragel counter top and white glossy tall Godmorgon cabinets, to match glossy white Abstrakt fronts in the kitchen. Also in the kitchen we used top cabinets to create a narrow island, but that's another story :)
