      • One can notice, oral cancer, including squamous (i.e., scaly) cell carcinoma; ovarian cancer, including those arising from epithelial cells, stromal (i.e., stromic) cells, bug cells and mesenchymal cells; pancreatic cancer; prostate (i.e., prostata, or glandula prostatica) cancer; rectal cancer; sarcomas, including soft tissue sarcomas, leiomyosarcoma. Prostate cancer, cancer that forms in tissues of the prostate (a gland (i.e., glandula) in the male (i.e., masculine) reproductive system (i.e., genital system) found below the bladder and in front of the rectum). Prostate cancer usually occurs in older men. Mesenchymal, refers to cells that develop into connective tissue (i.e., interstitial tissue, or supporting tissue), blood vessels, and lymphatic (i.e., vas lymphaticum) tissue. Oral cancer, cancer that forms in tissues of the oral cavity (i.e., cavitas oris, or cavum oris) (i.e., cavitas, or cavernous space) (the mouth (i.e., oral cavity, or ostium)) or the oropharynx (i.e., pars oralis pharyngis, or oral part of pharynx) (the part of the throat (i.e., gullet) at the back of the mouth). Rectal, by or having to do with the rectum. The rectum is the last several inches of the large intestine (i.e., bowel, or gut) (i.e., intestinum crassum) closest to the anus (i.e., anal orifice). Pancreatic, having to do with the pancreas. Ovarian, having to do with the ovaries, the female reproductive glands in which the ova (eggs) are formed. The ovaries are located in the pelvis, one on each side of the uterus (i.e., metra, or womb). Soft tissue, refers to muscle, fat, fibrous (i.e., fibrosa) tissue, blood vessels, or other supporting tissue (i.e., connective tissue) of the body. Oral, by or having to do with the mouth. Prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system. The prostate surrounds the part of the urethra (the tube (i.e., tuba) that empties the bladder) just below the bladder, and produces a fluid that forms part of the semen (i.e., seed, or seminal fluid). Rectal cancer, cancer that forms in the tissues of the rectum (the last several inches of the large intestine closest to the anus). Squamous cell, flat cell that looks like a fish scale (i.e., squama) under a microscope. These cells cover inside and outside surfaces of the body. They are found in the tissues that form the surface of the skin, the lining of the hollow organs of the body (such as the bladder, kidney (i.e., ren, or nephros), and uterus), and the passages of the respiratory and digestive (i.e., digestant) tracts. Squamous cell carcinoma, cancer that begins in squamous cells, which are thin, flat cells that look like fish scales. Squamous cells are found in the tissue that forms the surface of the skin, the lining of the hollow organs of the body, and the passages of the respiratory and digestive tracts. Also called epidermoid carcinoma (i.e., epidermoid cancer). Tissue is a group or layer (i.e., panniculus) of cells that work together to perform a specific function. Epithelial, refers to the cells that line the internal and external (i.e., externus) surfaces of the body. Cell is the individual unit that makes up the tissues of the body. All living things are made up of one or more cells. Leiomyosarcoma is a malignant (cancer) tumor (i.e., neoplasm) of smooth muscle (i.e., unstriated muscle, or unstriped muscle) cells that can arise almost anywhere in the body, but is most common in the uterus, abdomen (i.e., venter), or pelvis. Ovarian cancer, cancer that forms in tissues of the ovary (i.e., ovarium, or female gonad) (one of a pair of female reproductive glands in which the ova, or eggs, are formed). Most ovarian cancers are either ovarian epithelial carcinomas (cancer that begins in the cells on the surface of the ovary) or malignant germ cell (i.e., sex cell) tumors (cancer that begins in egg cells). Germ is a bacterium, virus (i.e., filtrable virus), or other microorganism that can cause infection and disease. Pancreatic cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells are found in the tissues of the pancreas. Also called exocrine (i.e., eccrine) cancer.
