      • It appears to be, women who have a breast density of seventy five percent or higher on a mammogram have a risk of breast cancer that is four to five times greater than that of women with little or no density, making mammographic breast density one of the strongest biomarkers of breast cancer risk. Breast cancer, cancer that forms in tissues of the breast, usually the ducts (tubes that carry milk to the nipple (i.e., papilla mammae, or mammilla)) and lobules (glands that make milk). It occurs in both men and women, although male (i.e., masculine) breast (i.e., mamma masculina, or mamma virilis) cancer is rare. Mammogram is an x-ray (i.e., radiograph, or roentgen ray) of the breast.

      • It`s apparent that, while increased breast density is a known risk factor (i.e., gene) for breast cancer, having a lower (i.e., inferior, or lower tubercle) breast density doesn`t necessarily mean a low risk of developing breast cancer, according to Fabian. Risk factor, something that increases the chance of developing a disease. Some examples of risk factors for cancer are age, a family history of certain cancers, use of tobacco products, being exposed to radiation (i.e., radiatio) or certain chemicals, infection with certain viruses or bacteria, and certain genetic changes. Family history is a record of the relationships among family members along with their medical histories. This includes current and past illnesses. A family history may show a pattern of certain diseases in a family. Also called family medical history.

      • It`s that, however, evaluating breast cancer risk through use of mammography is known to have a level of radiation exposure that is not acceptable for younger women; therefore, other methods are needed to evaluate breast density. Radiation, energy released in the form of particle or electromagnetic waves. Common sources of radiation include radon gas, cosmic rays from outer space (i.e., spatium), medical x-rays, and energy given off by a radioisotope (unstable form of a chemical element that releases radiation as it breaks down and becomes more stable). Mammography is the use of film or a computer to create a picture of the breast.
