Preview- It`s apparent that, pURPOSE This phase I trial is studying the side effects and best dose of dasatinib when given together with vorinostat in treating patients with accelerated phase or blastic phase chronic myelogenous leukemia or acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Phase I trial is the first step in testing a new treatment in humans. These studies test the best way to give a new treatment (for example, by mouth (i.e., oral cavity, or ostium), intravenous infusion, or injection) and the best dose. The dose is usually increased a little at a time in order to find the highest dose that does not cause harmful side effects. Because little is known about the possible risks and benefits of the treatments being tested, phase I trials usually include only a small number of patients who have not been helped by other treatments. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is an aggressive (fast-growing) type of leukemia (blood cancer) in which too many lymphoblasts (immature white blood cells) are found in the blood and bone marrow. Also called acute lymphocytic leukemia (i.e., lymphatic leukemia, or lymphoid leukemia) and ALL. Dasatinib is a drug used to treat certain types of chronic myeloid leukemia and acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Dasatinib is also being studied in the treatment of certain other blood diseases and types of cancer. Dasatinib binds to and blocks BCR-ABL and other proteins that help cancer cells grow. It is a type of tyrosine kinase inhibitor. Also called BMS-354825 and Sprycel. Vorinostat is a drug that is used to treat cutaneous T-cell lymphoma that does not get better, gets worse, or comes back during or after treatment with other drugs. It is also being studied in the treatment of other types of cancer. Vorinostat is a type of histone deacetylase inhibitor. Also called SAHA, suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid, and Zolinza. Lymphoblastic, refers to lymphoblasts (a type of immature white blood cell).
- One can recognize, to define the maximum tolerated dose of dasatinib and vorinostat in patients with accelerated stage or blastic stage chronic myelogenous leukemia or Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Philadelphia chromosome is an abnormality of chromosome 22 in which part of chromosome 9 is transferred to it. Bone marrow cells that contain the Philadelphia chromosome are often found in chronic myelogenous leukemia. Maximum tolerated dose is the highest dose of a drug or treatment that does not cause unacceptable side effects. The maximum tolerated dose is determined in clinical trials by testing increasing doses on different groups of people until the highest dose with acceptable side effects is found. Clinical, having to do with the examination and treatment of patients. Also called MTD. Chromosome, part of a cell that contains genetic information. Except for sperm (i.e., sperm cell, or spermatozoon) and eggs, all human cells contain 46 chromosomes.
- It would seem to be apparant that, clinical trials from NCI`s list of cancer clinical trials that are now accepting patients with blastic stage chronic myelogenous leukemia. NCI, nCI, part of the National Institutes of Health of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, is the Federal Government`s principal agency for cancer research. It conducts, coordinates, and funds cancer research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs with respect to the cause, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cancer. Access (i.e., access opening) the NCI Web site at http://www. cancer. gov. Also called National Cancer Institute.
