Cancer is a term for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and can invade nearby tissues. Cancer cells can also spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems. There are several main types of cancer. Carcinoma is a cancer that begins in the skin or in tissues that line or cover internal organs. Sarcoma is a cancer that begins in bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels, or other connective or supportive tissue. Leukemia is a cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue such as the bone marrow, and causes large numbers of abnormal blood cells to be produced and enter the blood. Lymphoma and multiple myeloma are cancers that begin in the cells of the immune system. Central nervous system cancers are cancers that begin in the tissues of the brain and spinal cord. Also called malignancy.

      • Apparently, MCP-1 expression was reported to be less in the cancerous epithelial cells of localized prostate cancer (Mazzucchelli et al., (1996) Am J Pathol 149, 501-509). The data presented here show that the function of MCP-1 in prostate cancer pathogenesis may be localized to the metastatic process and is associated with an important, novel mechanism of bone homing of prostate cancer cells. In experiments conducted during the course of development of the present invention, human bone marrow endothelial cells were shown secrete significantly higher levels of MCP-1 compared to human aortic endothelial cells, as well as human dermal microvascular endothelial cells. Metastatic, having to do with metastasis, which is the spread of cancer from the primary site (place where it started) to other places in the body. Secrete, to form and release a substance. In the body, cells secrete substances, such as sweat that cools the body or hormones that act in other parts of the body. Epithelial, refers to the cells that line the internal and external surfaces of the body. Bone marrow is the soft, sponge-like tissue in the center of most bones. It produces white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. Prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system. The prostate surrounds the part of the urethra (the tube that empties the bladder) just below the bladder, and produces a fluid that forms part of the semen. Prostate cancer, cancer that forms in tissues of the prostate (a gland in the male reproductive system found below the bladder and in front of the rectum). Prostate cancer usually occurs in older men. Localized, restricted to the site of origin, without evidence of spread.

      • It looks that, for example, in some embodiments, the present invention provides a method of inhibiting the growth of a cancer cell, comprising contacting the cancer cell with an agent that inhibits an activity of MCP-1. In some embodiments, the cancer cell is a prostate cancer cell (e.g., a metastatic prostate cancer cell). In some embodiments, the metastatic prostate cancer cell is a bone metastasis. Metastasis is the spread of cancer from one part of the body to another. A tumor formed by cells that have spread is called a metastatic tumor or a metastasis. The metastatic tumor contains cells that are like those in the original (primary) tumor. The plural form of metastasis is metastases (meh-TAS-tuh-SEEZ). Bone metastasis, cancer that has spread from the original (primary) tumor to the bone.

      • It`s possible to deduce that, 4 shows that MCP-1 induces Akt phosphorylation in prostate cancer cells. Akt is a group of enzymes involved in several processes related to cell growth and survival. Akt enzymes help to transfer signals inside cells. An Akt enzyme is a type of serine/threonine protein kinase. Also called protein kinase B. Phosphorylation is a process in which a phosphate group is added to a molecule, such as a sugar or a protein.
