Preview- It would appear that, though basal (i.e., basalis) cell (i.e., basilar cell) carcinomas (BCCs) and squamous (i.e., scaly) cell carcinomas (SCCs) represent the two major types of NMSC, the term also encompasses Merkel cell carcinomas, cutaneous lymphomas, adnexal (i.e., annexal) tumors, and other primary cutaneous neoplasms. Merkel cell is a special type of cell found right below the epidermis (i.e., cuticle, or cuticula) (top layer (i.e., panniculus) of skin (i.e., cutis)). These cells are very close to the nerve (i.e., nervus) endings that receive the sensation of touch (i.e., tactile sense) and may be involved in touch. The cells also contain substances that may act as hormones. Cutaneous, having to do with the skin. Cell is the individual unit that makes up the tissues of the body. All living things are made up of one or more cells. Basal cell is a small, round cell found in the lower (i.e., inferior, or lower tubercle) part (or base (i.e., basis, or basement)) of the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin. Squamous cell, flat cell that looks like a fish scale (i.e., squama) under a microscope. These cells cover inside and outside surfaces of the body. They are found in the tissues that form the surface of the skin, the lining of the hollow organs of the body (such as the bladder, kidney (i.e., ren, or nephros), and uterus (i.e., metra, or womb)), and the passages of the respiratory and digestive (i.e., digestant) tracts. Organ is a part of the body that performs a specific function. For example, the heart (i.e., cor, or coeur) is an organ.
- You can determine, acitretin for chemoprevention of non-melanoma (i.e., malignant melanoma) skin cancers in renal (i.e., nephric) transplant recipients. Melanoma is a form of cancer that begins in melanocytes (cells that make the pigment melanin (i.e., melanotic pigment)). It may begin in a mole (i.e., nevus, or nevus pigmentosus) (skin melanoma), but can also begin in other pigmented tissues, such as in the eye (i.e., oculus) or in the intestines. Chemoprevention is the use of drugs, vitamins, or other agents to try to reduce the risk of, or delay the development or recurrence (i.e., relapse) of, cancer. Recurrence, cancer that has recurred (come back), usually after a period of time during which the cancer could not be detected. The cancer may come back to the same place as the original (primary) tumor or to another place in the body. Also called recurrent cancer.
- Apparently, incidence of basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas in a population younger than forty years. Incidence is the number of new cases of a disease (i.e., illness, or morbus) diagnosed each year.
